Avaaz: Bodies of Tortured Children Found in Homs
Avaaz citizen journalists reported that 32 severely tortured children aged between 2 and 10 years were found on Thursday evening in the Homs district of Rifai. Citizen journalist ‘Walid’ said: “A few FSA soldiers and activists entered some houses in Rifai district adjacent to Karam El-Zeiton after hearing news about massacres committed against neighborhood families by the army, and were surprised to find 32 children and two women in their twenties still alive despite being severely injured.”
“They were all suffering from different types of injuries: knives stabs on the neck, chest and abdomen, in addition to broken bones and cut fingers. One of the two women was still alive after being shot five times and the fingers of one children were chopped.”
A 10-year-old girl told her rescuers: “I had 500 Syrian pounds, I had to give the money to one of the soldiers so that he wouldn’t hurt me, but I was severely beaten.”
Another child confirmed that his sister was shot in front of him and died immediately while his mother was shot and bled to death in front of him. He added that he ignored where their bodies were.
One of the women who survived the massacre said: “Two days ago we were gathered by the troops, they started to insult us using obscene and extremely sectarian words and then began killing people one by one.”
Of the children, 18 have been taken back to relatives of them in Homs. The others, some of them less than 3 years old, are being taken care of by women in field hospitals since no one can find their families.
