Avaaz: Civilians hit as shelling of Homs continues

HOMS
The army resumed shelling of Homs districts Khaldiya, Jouret Shiyah and Alqarabees using mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades. Activists told Avaaz the bombing began at 8am this morning. Activists in Homs independently confirmed that missiles were launched from the security headquarters and airforce intelligence headquarters near Wa’r.

Tanks and armoured vehicles targeted Alaqrabees and Jouret Shiah. Armed clashes were reported there between the army and the FSA, with both sides exchanging accusations of who was responsible for violating the ceasefire agreement. Syrian officials accused the opposition of firing mortar shells into regime stronghold Zahra
neighbourhood, allegedly killing several civilians. This was denied by the opposition, who confirmed their commitment to the cease-fire agreement.

Regime bombing in Khalidya neighbourhood resulted in at least 4 civilians killed. The activist ‘Yazn’ witnessed the army using tanks to shell Zayd Bin Thabet mosque, part-destroying it. The pace of bombardment subsided this afternoon, but citizen journalist ‘Mohammed’ said it was not a reassuring sign: “The ceasefire cannot come into force until the army withdraws from inside the city, because they will continue bombing at any time, and snipers have not committed to the ceasefire. They are targeting anything that moves.”

Killed under torture
Citizen journalists reported the deaths of two civilians killed under torture following their arrest earlier today. In the town of Aqrab in Hawla, the activist Abu Yazn reports the death of a defected policeman, Mohammed al-Turk (52).  He was killed under torture following his arrest 20 days ago. His body was handed over today showing clear signs of torture.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YZ5VwPbX33c  a burning building in Khalidiya neighbourhood targeted by mortar shells

Khatab attacked

According to activists the army stormed Khatab today, having shelled it yesterday. Activist ‘Abu Majd’ told Avaaz: ”The army raided the town today, supported by the security forces and Shabiha.  They killed at least one civilian. They have destroyed, looted and vandalised a large number of homes in addition to arresting nearly 60 people.”
Citizen journalist tortured to death
Activists confirmed the death of the citizen journalist Alaa Aldawry, 45. He was killed under torture, having been taken in an ambush by Shabiha militiamen. The activist Abu-Magd told Avaaz that Alaa had been arrested several times in the past. “He regularly carried his camera to document violations by the army and security forces.  Activists stressed that the Shabiha set up the ambush, which was led by the retired General Walid Abaza.  Walid Abaza served in Political Security and was one of the most prominent regime figures during the attacks on Hama in the early 1980s. He now heads Shabiha operations in Hama.
Eyewitnesses told Avaaz the Shabiha tried to stop Alaa’s car but he refused to stop, so they shot and wounded him in order to arrest him.  He was transferred to the National Hospital in the town of Saqlabya where he was beaten and tortured.  His body was returned to his family with visible signs of torture.National Hospital converted into detention centre
In the town of Halfaya, the army has cleared out the National Hospital and converted it into a detention centre, according to local residents.
3 civilians shot dead after security forces fire on car
Three men were killed in the neighbourhood of Sheikh Anbar, when security forces fired on the activist Fadi Alousta’s car. He suffered serious injuries. Five other activists tried to save him and to rush him to the hospital but the security forces fired on them and the activist Samer Safaf was killed on the spot. Obeida Modalela was also seriously injured.  Activists were unable to save them due to the intensity of the shooting and Fadi Alousta as well as Obeida Modalela bled to death.Demonstration in the neighbourhood of Hamidiya in Hama http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fv55Oz1dA0s&feature=youtu.be

According to activists in the city of Douma, Basil Yousif Najjar (6) was shot dead by snipers late last night.
Citizen journalist ‘Abu Mohammed’ reported: “A sniper targeted a car carrying the child Basil Al-Najjar.  His farther, mother and 10-month-old brother were injured but Basil died on the spot. The people of Douma came out to the funeral but it was quickly turned into a demonstration.”
IDLIB
Clashes erupted in the city of Idlib and continued throughout the night yesterday between the Syrian army and FSA fighters.  The FSA was able to gain control of parts of the city, and activists told Avaaz that army vehicles and heavy weapons were no longer present in the city, allowing the FSA to advance forward. The activist ‘Nour’ from Idlib said: “ The FSA did not violate the cease-fire agreement, but the regular army has violated it and ordered their forces to kill innocent people. This has left us no choice but to use self-defence and clash with these forces. The army forces used helicopters to bomb the city of Idlib and its countryside using heavy machine-guns. The bombing has led to the death of at least one civilian.”
