Massive Explosion in Damascus Military Airport
An explosion shook Mezze Military Airport in Damascus on Saturday at around 13:20 (local). Eyewitnesses reported columns of smoke rising from the airport following the explosion.
The explosion was confirmed to Al-Ayyam by several independent sources who were unable to identify the cause.
The explosion was followed by intense clashes with automatic weapons by unidentified parties. Security forces responded by shutting down two major highways that connect Damascus with the rest of the country.
Residents living close to the airport reported that the surrounding area was also sealed off by security forces. Ambulances and fire trucks were seen arriving at the airport.
